A Facebook account after a death

Facebook can memorialize a profile (it stays visible with 'Remembering' above the name) or delete it permanently. A pre-designated legacy contact can manage a memorialized profile.

Your options

  • Memorialize the profile (friends can share memories on the timeline)
  • Request permanent deletion of the account
  • A legacy contact can manage tribute posts and update the profile picture

What you will need

  • Proof of death (death certificate or an obituary link)
  • For deletion requests: proof that you are an immediate family member or executor

The official process

Platforms change their procedures regularly; always start from the official page:

Record your own wishes in advance

In Emberalis you set per account whether it should be memorialized, deleted, transferred or kept, and your emergency contacts get that list, together with this guide, when it matters.
