A Google account after a death

Google's Inactive Account Manager (set up in advance) shares data with chosen contacts after inactivity. Without it, survivors can submit a request to close the account or obtain data through a formal process.

Your options

  • Inactive Account Manager: automatic sharing/deletion the user configured
  • Request to close the account of a deceased user
  • Court-supported request for data from the account

What you will need

  • Death certificate and government ID of the requester
  • For data requests: possibly a court order, at Google's discretion

The official process

Platforms change their procedures regularly; always start from the official page:

In Emberalis you set per account whether it should be memorialized, deleted, transferred or kept, and your emergency contacts get that list, together with this guide, when it matters.
